The music genre known as Funk, began in the mid 1900's. Funk is a culmination of Jazz, R&B, Soul and traditional African sounds. It also the predecessor of modern day Hip Hop. New Orleans native drummer, Earl Palmer, coined the term, Funk, in an attempt to make the music danceable.
The musician, James Brown embraced Funk. His combination of music and dance moves lead to the popularity of Funk.
Thanks to a contemporary musician, Bruno Mars, Funk is making a comeback.
